Things I love and one I forgot.

THIS SONG.

Go buy the album on iTunes. I dare you.

Things I love.

Justin Townes Earle:

I had the privilege of seeing this beautiful man live at Golden Plains but a few weeks ago. I am ashamed to say I had not heard him prior to this, but be assured gentle listeners that I have made up for lost time.

Dave Hause:

Lead singer of Philadelphia punk rockers 'The Loved Ones' is my favourite acoustic punk
rock songbird of the moment. I saw him support Hot Water Music back in December and fell in love with him and his beautiful soul/music/neck tattoos. Sigh, neck tattoos. New album just release in February 'Resolutions' is a fantasticly honest americana record that is meant to be played whilst driving/dreaming/changing. Hopefully not all at the same time.

The Fest:

I am potentially going. With my potential monies. And it will be wondrous in all its dorky punk rock glory. This plan has a lot of potential. (what a weird word huh?)

Boogie:

Get your tickets now. I am going to this, starting to live the dream. Look out for a banner that says 'Rocksteo'... with the possible byline of 'Crack my bitch up', 'Friday i'm in pain... but we've got the cure' or 'ow-chestra'. Many, many unfunny alternatives available.

Cuba is Japan 7" Release

Tomorrow night. Its also the Alpine Areas Label Launch (talk about tongue twister..). Get along to the Workers Club and support. T'will be fun.

Lo-fi Austin fun

Funfunfun, filled with potential.

...I just want to give them a better mic.

Yelling Bird - Album Review

So a little debut album fell into my hands a few weeks ago at dear Golden Plains (I am planning to write a little something on that, life is getting in the damn way!) and I must say I have been (surprise) SLACK in reviewing it. I blame society.

Yelling Bird are a Melbourne three piece, comprising of James Wallace, Hugh Ackland and Adam Pankhurst (Canberra defector), who have been quietly been going about their business for a few years now, their Self-titled being recorded over the best part of 2 years. I for one am so glad of the time they took to work on this album, for above all, its the care and love for each track that shines through.

From the soft build of the opener, Post, the album sets you out on an journey of eerie pianos, psych guitars and skillfully restrained percussion that takes you in search of meaning, and like all good things, it is the road you took that matters in the end. The careful composition of James Wallace and Hugh Ackland is not overworked but honest, bare and beautiful in its first few steps into the big wide world. In a time of post-punk surf revival, this is a breath of fresh air that wears its heart on its sleeve, and you can hear the city come alive on each track. This album sounds like Melbourne, to me at least. I guess thats the joy of living in such a diverse town.

Stand out tracks include the bare 'Fields', Acklands beautifully honest 'Sad Nine', and the prog-psych build of Chemistry, lending itself beautifully to its name, as it feels like a naturally unfurling experiment. Truth be told, each time I listen I decide on a new favourite, as the album is like that friend we all want to be. The one that has endless joy coming out their pores, and yet has a new layer, a new angle, with each new conversation.

Please, if there is one thing you do, its to send some money to Mr Wallace and get yourself a copy. Find them on the Faceplace. Hug them in the street. Ok, that is three things. Do as many things as you like, who am I to tell you what to do?

Sweet cakes and milkshakes

As a slogger (slack blogger), I am creating a giant backlog of new discoveries that I am so afraid I will forget, as my brain is not the most retentive machine at the best of times. So here is a small sample of some new things that are exciting me, more for my benefit than yours, oh invisible people that I am writing to.

Ilyas Ahmed -
Amajan

What a song. Utterly haunting and has the power to stop me in my tracks.. which has not happened in a fair while.

----

Kurt Vile -
Baby's Arms

Again, has an ethereal quality to it, whilst maintaining an earthy quality in his voice. Reminiscent of Ryan Adams' in vocals, yet I get images of playful dolphins. Makes me happy.

---

The Soft Moon -
Breathe the Fire

Dark, intense, 80s esque, jesus and mary chain-y synth pop. Win. I see it popping up on a soundtrack... or perhaps I shall write a movie for this song. Ps. Last I checked, the best movie idea I had came from a dream I had after watching Memento. So I wouldn't hold your breath.

---

Sic Alps -
Do you want to give $$?

Local band I saw with Miss Nagle at a Leather-Daddy bar one rainy Thursday evening in San Fran. They had some weird fight on stage, and it was awkward, but the tunes were sweet.

--

Leah Seigel -
Human

A red-headed rockabilly bartender took me under her wing in a motorcycle bar in New York, and told me I should listen to this fine lady. And I'm so glad I kept that little bit of paper in my wallet... for what a voice.

---

Its freakin 3.24am. I am going to sleep. More adventure tunes soon.

Melted - Ty Segall

So upon my recent travels I was wandering around the terrain of San Francisco,
avoid rainshowers by drinking coffee, eating burritos and buying second hand books
(read this: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4964367-some-things-that-meant-the-world-to-me)
when I stumbled upon my new favourite record store in the world. Exaggeration, perhaps.
Do I still love Polyester? Yes. Yet I digress... I was here:

http://www.aquariusrecords.org/

It is amazing. The staff were super cute, nice and happy to chat to a lone red-headed
aussie wolf. I asked about local acts that I should listen to, and my new best-record-friend
suggested San Fran's new darling, Ty Segall. He put him on the stereo and I
walked out with a new CD.

Melted

Ty Segall is a Bay area local, who has been playing around the town for a few years,
but has been a solo artist since 2008. His recent effort, Melted, has shot him
to a new place in the hearts of 'friscians and lovers of catchy rock and roll
worldwide, garnering attention from the likes of Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Sub pop
(who have got the rights to his next record). Watch now, he is going places.

Melted in its entirety is a very complete, very cohesive record that in essence is
lofi catchy surf punk. Somewhat like what The Hives would sound like if they
recorded in a bathroom, in Northern California. The openner, Finger, lulls you into
a false sense of summery sweetness, before hitting you with a wall of guitars
about a minute in. Girlfriend is the standout third track.. you cannot help but
tap your feet and dance like a washing machine (this is how I dance, not recommended
unless you are at least 43% robot). Tracks like Sad Fuzz and Alone lend themselves
to a Beatles on acid feel, while My Sunshine is the 60s laced with 90s melody
driven grunge rock.

In all, just forget my buzz word descriptions of songs and get this album. A very
solid effort from a band that is going places. Hopefully to Melbourne one
summery day, and I will dance like some sort of happy appliance.
